An open letter to the founder doing the work
There is always more you could build. What needs to happen next?
A new feature. A cleaner website. Another launch. A better onboarding flow. A different channel. When you are responsible for product, selling and delivery, the list of possible improvements can become a business of its own. Every item can sound sensible. That still leaves the most important question unanswered: which one deserves your attention now?
It is possible to work seriously on the wrong question. You can refine an experience before you understand the buyer. You can gather an audience before you have an offer. You can win an initial payment while leaving the customer's first useful outcome unfinished. Those situations call for different decisions. A longer task list does not distinguish between them.
Zero to MRR is organized around five gates because the sequence matters. Signal asks about the buyer and the costly problem. Proof asks for a commercial commitment. Audience asks how qualified buyers find you repeatedly. Blade asks whether the product delivers a complete valuable job. Compound asks what the business retains and what its economics can support.
The Field Tools Workbook gives you places to record the work: the conversations, the offer, the channel test, the tooling choices, the pricing assumptions and the weekly review. Read a section, use the relevant tool, and leave a record that another person could examine. Your next step becomes a decision connected to evidence.
You do not need to pretend every gate has passed. A clearly documented “not yet” is a useful place to begin. It tells you what the next experiment needs to address. The point of the bundle is to make that work concrete enough to do, and clear enough to review when the result arrives.
If you came here from a live session, here is the offer.
This is the ProInstincts ebook and workbook together for $59 USD. You receive two PDFs, with a Personal license for your own business. You can buy near the top of this page, or keep reading for the complete breakdown. The page explains the materials, the way to use them and the purchase terms so you can decide whether they fit the work in front of you.
Two parts. One working system.
The thinking. And somewhere to do the work.
01 / THE FIELD GUIDE
Zero to MRR
66-page ebook · PDF · $49 separately
The Five Instinct Gates from idea to first recurring revenue. The book begins with the bootstrapper's math, then moves through Signal, Proof, Audience, Blade and Compound. It includes a field-tool appendix, the five sirens, a 90-day plan, glossary and research notes.
Use it to understand the decision behind the worksheet: what you are trying to establish, what counts as evidence, and how to interpret the result in the context of your own business. Its examples teach the method. They do not promise your outcome.
Revenue, margin, churn, cohorts and runway
Separate lenses for B2B and B2C buying
Buyer evidence, commercial proof and distribution
First value, retention and weekly decisions
02 / THE WORKING COMPANION
Field Tools Workbook
24-page workbook · PDF · $19 separately
Ten tools with instructions and working sheets, from the 20-Interview Protocol and Pain Ledger to the Churn Mirror and Weekly 5 + Gate Tracker. Each connects to a gate so that the tool you open has a reason to be open.
Print the pages or adapt the tools into your own system within the Personal license. Record a date, owner and source. Finish with a decision to pass, gather more evidence or reject the hypothesis. The workbook is designed to support use, not a collection you need to admire before starting.
Interview and buyer-pain records
Pilot and paid-waitlist planning
Channel, first-value and build decisions
Pricing, churn and a weekly gate tracker
Included: these two PDFs. Coaching, courses, community membership, software subscriptions, SIGNAL and Compound Year materials are separate from this bundle.

The book starts with the bootstrapper's math for a reason. A cash receipt, a deposit and a recurring subscription can all arrive in your account. They do not mean the same thing for the business. If you mix them together, it becomes difficult to tell whether a subscription model is working or a one-time event is funding another month.
Part 0 covers recurring revenue, the MRR bridge, customer counts, churn, margins, cohorts and runway. The intention is to make the underlying assumptions visible. What is included in recurring revenue? What does it cost to deliver? Which customers are still present after the initial purchase? What period and denominator sit behind the rate you are reporting?
These questions are useful before you have a large business. They help you describe the business you are trying to build and the evidence you will need to judge it. If the offer requires intensive hands-on delivery, record that. If a customer's annual payment is being normalized into monthly recurring value, make the treatment explicit. A clear definition makes later comparisons more meaningful.
The book's calculations are teaching demonstrations rather than forecasts. It does not establish a typical revenue, churn rate or customer acquisition cost for your business. You supply the observations, the economics and the judgment. The material helps you put them into a form that can support a decision.
The route through the work
Five gates. One place to begin.
Read in order to understand the map. Execute the first unresolved gate to decide where the next effort belongs.
01
Signal
20-Interview Protocol · Pain Ledger
Find the problem someone already pays to live with.
Who has the problem, what does it cost, and who can pay?
An idea can sound useful to almost anyone when the conversation is hypothetical. Signal moves the conversation into a specific person's recent experience. What happened last time? What did they do? What did that workaround cost? Who approved the spend? Those questions create a different kind of starting point from a list of features people say they might enjoy.
The book explains the first gate. The workbook gives you the 20-Interview Protocol and the Pain Ledger to work through it. One helps you conduct conversations about actual events; the other helps you keep the evidence comparable. Dates, roles, exact quotes, frequency, current workarounds and buying authority belong in the record. A confident interpretation belongs beside that evidence, rather than taking its place.
Imagine, as a teaching example, a founder considering software for a small service business. Instead of opening with a product pitch, they ask how the owner handled the last missed appointment. They learn whether the problem happened, how often it repeats, what the owner already tried and whether someone has a budget to address it. The conversation might support the idea. It might also reveal that a different problem deserves attention first.
That is a useful outcome either way. You are looking for a defensible next decision, including a decision to change the hypothesis. A completed page is valuable when you can point to the source behind a claim and explain what would change your mind. The gate asks you to earn that confidence before you expand the roadmap.
02
Proof
One-Page Pilot Offer · Paid Waitlist Page
Turn a promising conversation into a bounded offer.
Has a real buyer made a commercial commitment?
A person can like your idea and still have no reason to buy it. Proof asks you to make the commercial question explicit. Who is the offer for? What outcome are you promising? What is included, what is excluded, what does it cost, and when will it be delivered? A clear offer gives both sides something concrete to evaluate.
The One-Page Pilot Offer and Paid Waitlist Page help make those decisions visible. They are working tools for describing an outcome and recording a commitment. They do not turn every kind of commitment into the same evidence. A business pilot, a consumer deposit and a subscription payment have different delivery expectations and obligations. The book keeps the actual payer and buying context in view.
For an illustrative example, consider a founder offering a short pilot to reduce a recurring administrative task. The useful next step is to define the pilot's scope and success criterion, describe the price and delivery terms, and ask the appropriate buyer to decide. If the answer is no, the record should preserve why. If it is yes, the founder has a delivery commitment to honor, not permission to invent a larger product around it.
Pre-sales require care. Refund and delivery terms need to be explicit, and the obligations of your jurisdiction still apply. The bundle supplies operating prompts rather than legal advice. Its purpose at this gate is to help you replace an ambiguous expression of interest with a commercial decision you can describe accurately.
03
Audience
One-Channel Scorecard
Make the next conversation less accidental.
Can one channel repeatedly reach qualified buyers?
One post can attract attention without establishing a dependable route to customers. Audience asks you to connect the channel to the people it reaches and the next step they take. A useful record distinguishes views from qualified interest, and qualified interest from a paid commitment. It also shows the observation period instead of treating a single strong day as a pattern.
The One-Channel Scorecard gives that work a home. Use it to record the channel you are testing, the relevant activity, qualified responses and the commercial follow-through you can actually observe. Keep your definitions consistent. If a signup becomes qualified only after a conversation, say so. If attribution is uncertain, preserve the uncertainty rather than assigning every sale to the most visible post.
For example, a founder might teach the same narrow problem during a series of live sessions. In this illustrative scenario, the useful record includes the topic, audience response, visits to the offer and the next steps people take. A widely watched session and a smaller session with several relevant conversations can tell very different stories. The scorecard helps keep those stories separate.
The bundle does not promise a winning channel, a follower count or a conversion rate. It gives you a way to evaluate your own distribution work. If repeat access to the right buyers is the current constraint, the next experiment belongs there. More features cannot answer a channel question on their own.
04
Blade
Blade One-Job Worksheet · Build Matrix
Deliver one complete job someone can actually finish.
Can a buyer reach meaningful first value?
Access is only the beginning of a product experience. A customer can create an account, click around and still leave without completing the job they came to do. Blade asks you to define one useful outcome from the buyer's perspective, then examine the path to that outcome from beginning to end.
The Blade One-Job Worksheet helps narrow the job. The Build Matrix helps choose how to implement it: no-code, hybrid or code. It asks you to consider expected logic change, data sensitivity, load, rebuild tolerance and integration depth, with engineering-control overrides for security, regulation and reliability. The goal is a complete valuable job supported by a tooling choice you can explain.
Imagine a tool intended to help a business prepare a recurring report. In this teaching example, a successful signup is not the finish line. The founder would watch whether a new buyer can bring in the necessary information, produce the report and use it for the intended decision. Every point where the founder must step in becomes evidence about the experience. A polished dashboard does not resolve an unfinished workflow.
The book discusses first value and the difference between business and consumer contexts. Its working pass bars are decision prompts to interpret with your sample size and economics. They are not universal laws. Use the worksheet to state what success means in your setting, record the attempt and decide what needs to change next.
Can you explain revenue, retention and delivery economics?
A new sale is a real event. So is a cancellation. Compound asks you to understand both sides of a recurring business: what comes in, what stays, what expands, what contracts and what it costs to serve. The book introduces the MRR bridge, customer cohorts, churn, margins, pricing and cash so that a growth story can be checked against underlying records.
The Pricing Ladder, Churn Mirror and Weekly 5 + Gate Tracker turn those topics into recurring work. They help you examine the offer, record why customers leave and bring the next decision back into a weekly review. A percentage should have a denominator and a time window. A pricing decision should have a reason. An unexplained difference in the revenue bridge should remain an open question until it is reconciled.
Consider an illustrative business that adds new subscriptions while earlier customers leave. A headline about new sales can miss the erosion underneath. Looking at cohorts and reconciling recurring revenue makes it possible to ask a more precise question: are the new customers replacing a growing problem, or is the business retaining the value it creates? That question matters even when the business is still small.
The method cannot make customers renew. It can help you notice what your own records say and choose a response deliberately. You may discover an onboarding problem, a mismatched promise, an expensive delivery model or a segment that needs a different offer. The next useful action depends on that evidence, rather than on the appeal of a bigger top-line number.

A framework becomes useful when it changes a decision.
Reading can help you name a problem. Applying a tool can expose what is missing from your answer. You may think you know the buyer's cost until you try to fill the Pain Ledger with dated sources. You may think the offer is clear until you write its scope and delivery terms on one page. You may think onboarding works until you define the exact first-value job.
That is why these two materials belong together. The book supplies context and sequence; the workbook supplies a repeated invitation to make the work observable. You can move between them as needed. Open the relevant explanation, work through the sheet, and check whether the result changes what you will do next.
The appendix in the ebook also introduces the ten field tools. The separate workbook gives you the companion working pages for putting them to use. The bundle is the same two products sold individually, brought together at a lower combined price. There is no hidden premium tier inside the purchase and no extra subscription required to begin using the worksheets.
You still have to conduct the conversations, write the offer, deliver the outcome and review the evidence. Buying a framework does not do those jobs for you. What it can provide is a structure that keeps those jobs connected, especially when there are more possible tasks than hours available to complete them.
The complete workbook inventory
Ten tools. Each with a job to do.
These are the actual tools in the Field Tools Workbook. The descriptions below summarize their purpose; the purchased PDF contains the instructions and working sheets.
T01 / Signal
The 20-Interview Protocol
Reconstruct the last real problem before you pitch a solution. The protocol covers a focused buyer segment, research conversations, current workarounds, costs and the person responsible for a budget. Keep accurate notes and ask for appropriate consent before recording. The output is a source-linked record you can return to when deciding what the evidence supports.
T02 / Signal
The Pain Ledger
Bring the buyer's current cost into one consistent record. The ledger includes the event, frequency, actual cost or time, workaround, authority, quote and source. Scoring can help compare observations when you disclose the scoring rules. It should never convert a guess into an observed dollar amount or hide evidence that contradicts your preferred idea.
T03 / Proof
The One-Page Pilot Offer
Write down the offer a buyer is being asked to accept. Define the buyer, outcome, scope, commercial terms and the decision you need. A bounded pilot is easier to discuss when both sides can see what is being delivered. Use the sheet to clarify the commitment before promising more work or adding more features.
T04 / Proof
The Paid Waitlist Page
Plan a commercial waitlist with explicit terms instead of treating every email address as purchase intent. Describe the offer and the commitment honestly, including delivery and refund expectations. This is a worksheet for your own offer; buying this bundle does not create a waitlist, payment integration or pre-sale campaign for you.
T05 / Audience
The One-Channel Scorecard
Track a channel long enough to examine what it actually produces. Keep activity, qualified responses, attribution and the next step visible. Consistent definitions make one period comparable with another. You can then choose whether to continue the channel experiment, change it or gather more evidence, rather than switching channels whenever a post disappoints.
T06 / Blade
The Blade One-Job Worksheet
Name the complete job the buyer needs to finish and define the first useful result. Then examine the route from the starting point to that result. The worksheet helps keep the product discussion attached to a buyer's outcome, especially when the easiest work to ship is not the work that completes the experience.
T07 / Blade
The Build Matrix
Compare no-code, hybrid and code using five criteria: expected logic change, data sensitivity, twelve-month load, rebuild tolerance and integration depth. Record the scores and the reason for your choice. Security, regulation, secrets or reliability can override the directional total when engineering control is required. Reassess the choice as the business grows rather than treating a tool preference as a permanent architecture decision.
T08 / Compound
The Pricing Ladder
Examine the shape of your offer and the relationship between value, price and delivery. Write down the assumptions you need to test instead of borrowing a supposedly typical price from an unrelated market. Pricing work belongs beside buyer evidence and costs; the worksheet helps keep those questions available for review.
T09 / Compound
The Churn Mirror
Look at lost customers as evidence about the business. Record the context and reasons you can verify, then examine whether the promise, customer fit or delivery experience needs attention. Keep a customer's actual explanation separate from your interpretation. The purpose is to make a better decision about retention, rather than to explain every departure away.
T10 / Compound
The Weekly 5 + Gate Tracker
Return to the current gate and decide what the next week needs to produce. Track the evidence, the owner and the decision so that weekly activity connects to a business question. The record can also tell you to revisit an earlier gate when the buyer segment, channel or pricing model changes. Progress remains something you can explain.

You do not need to complete the entire workbook before doing something useful. Start by writing down the business or offer you are evaluating. Name the buyer as specifically as your evidence allows. Then work through the five gate questions in order and stop at the first answer you cannot support with a current record.
Find the first unresolved gate.
Keep what you know separate from what you assume. If you have a payment but little understanding of the buyer's recurring problem, keep that gap visible. A later positive event does not automatically settle every earlier question.
Read that part of the book.
Look for the decision the gate is asking you to make. Note the definitions and the kind of evidence you need. Interpret any working pass bar in the context of your buyer, sample size and economics.
Open the matching tool.
Choose a worksheet connected to the gap. Set an owner and a date. Record the source of the evidence, including uncertainty or contrary observations. A smaller honest record is more useful than a fuller page of assumptions.
Decide what happens next.
Pass, continue gathering evidence or reject the hypothesis. Write why. Choose the next action that can change that decision and decide when to review it. Return to the tracker when new evidence arrives.
A practical example of a starting point
Suppose you have an idea and several encouraging conversations, but no commercial offer. This is an illustrative situation, not a customer story. You might first check whether the conversations establish a specific recurring pain and a buyer with authority to pay. If that evidence is present, the next useful work could be drafting the One-Page Pilot Offer and asking a qualified buyer for a decision.
Suppose instead that people already pay but need you to guide them through every step. The unresolved question may concern first value. You might open the Blade One-Job Worksheet, define the buyer's complete job and observe the next attempt to finish it. The point is to choose work that addresses the actual constraint, rather than to repeat the same starting exercise regardless of your situation.
The book also includes a 90-day plan. Treat a plan as something to connect to the evidence you collect, not a promise that every business can advance through the same stages on the same schedule. A discovery that changes the plan can be progress when the decision is clear and the reasoning is preserved.
Make a considered choice
For founders who want to examine the evidence.
This may fit the work in front of you.
You are exploring a software or recurring-revenue idea and want to work through the buyer and offer before expanding the build. Or you already have payments and need a clearer way to examine distribution, first value, pricing or retention.
You are willing to talk with buyers, keep records and revise a hypothesis. You want a compact guide and reusable working tools that you can bring into your own business. You can make time to apply a section, even if you do not read every page in one sitting.
Be clear about what you need.
If you need someone to build the product, run the marketing, provide individual coaching or guarantee an income, this PDF bundle does not provide those services. It also does not supply a ready-made business, a resale product or permission to distribute the materials to your audience.
If you are unsure whether the five-gate approach fits, try the free Gate Finder first. You can explore the central questions and return to the bundle when you know whether the guide and workbook would be useful.
The company behind the materials
Built for the founder in the details.
ProInstincts is a founder-led technology venture company. Its founder, Arthur Ketchel II, is a software engineering leader, technical founder and fractional CTO with more than two decades of experience building products and engineering organizations across startups and large enterprises. Field Systems brings its focus to the decisions a founder has to make while doing the work.
The materials ask you to keep evidence and interpretation separate. That principle applies to the offer, too. The teaching scenarios are illustrative, the arithmetic examples are demonstrations, and the method is a discipline for making decisions. Your business supplies the observations that give those decisions meaning.
ProInstincts Enterprises, Inc. is the company behind Field Systems. The ebook and workbook are its authored October 2026 digital editions. You can read about the company, examine the Field Tools License, or contact [email protected] with a product question before deciding.
The offer is straightforward: the ebook provides the route through the questions, the workbook provides the working tools, and you bring the business, the evidence and the decisions. Whether that is worth $59 depends on what you need to work through next.
The ebook + workbook bundle
A clear offer, with time to decide.
The bundle includes the 66-page ebook and 24-page workbook. Personal purchases follow the existing 14-day, any-reason refund-request policy.
$59 USD · one time
Personal license · Digital delivery after payment confirmation
Two digital PDFs: the 66-page Zero to MRR ebook and the 24-page Field Tools Workbook. The bundle contains the same ebook and workbook offered separately. It does not include a course, coaching session, community membership, software subscription, editable source files or additional product kit.
How much is it?
The bundle is $59 USD as a one-time purchase. The ebook is listed separately at $49 and the workbook at $19, a combined $68. Buying them together saves $9 against those separate listed prices. Any applicable tax is shown at checkout. There is no bundle subscription or renewal charge.
How do I receive the files?
After payment is confirmed, the order page provides the two entitled downloads. The purchase email also provides a private access link. Use an email address you can access and keep the order reference. If the private link expires, the order recovery page lets you request a fresh link. Expiring links do not end your purchased-edition license.
Are these interactive PDFs or editable templates?
These are PDF editions with worksheet pages. You can read them in a PDF reader, print the worksheets, or adapt the tools into your own system within the license. Native editable documents and interactive PDF form fields are not part of this offer. You do not need a ProInstincts software subscription to use the tools.
Can I use the tools in my business?
This purchase is a Personal license for use in your own business. You may print, complete and adapt the tools for that permitted use. The license is perpetual for the edition purchased. Reselling, redistributing, publicly posting the pages or repackaging them as your own paid product is not permitted. Read the Field Tools License for the full terms and other use cases.
What if the bundle is not a fit?
For Personal purchases of the ebook, workbook or bundle, the existing policy lets you request a refund within 14 days of purchase for any reason. Email [email protected] with your order reference. This is the published refund policy for these digital products; no additional performance guarantee is part of the offer.
Will this get me to a particular revenue number?
No revenue outcome is promised. The book presents a decision method and working pass bars, not a guaranteed result or an industry law. Its scenarios are illustrative teaching examples, not customer testimonials. Arithmetic examples are demonstrations, not forecasts. Your buyer, execution, costs, market and obligations remain specific to your business.
Can I start if I do not have a product yet?
Yes. The book's Signal and Proof sections address the work before a fuller build: understanding a buyer's current problem and asking for a commercial commitment to a bounded outcome. If you already have paying customers, you can start with the first unresolved gate instead of treating every chapter as a prerequisite to action.
Do I have to join a mailing list?
No. Purchasing does not subscribe you to Field Notes. The purchase email is for your order and private access. The free Gate Finder is also available if you want to explore the framework before buying. You can choose separately whether any other ProInstincts offer is useful to you.
The bundle brings two products together. Each is also available on its own through the same secure checkout.

The next decision is yours
You do not need every answer. You need the next honest question.
The next stage of the business might begin with a buyer conversation. It might begin with a clearer offer, a channel record, an observed first-value attempt or a closer look at retention. The gate helps you name the question. The tool helps you gather and organize the evidence. The decision remains yours.
If that is the kind of work you want to do, put the two PDFs where you can use them. Read the relevant section. Open the matching sheet. Choose an experiment with an owner and a date. Come back to the record when the result arrives, especially if it differs from what you expected.
You are buying the purchased digital editions for your own business, with no recurring bundle charge.
